Join us for an illuminating conversation with our special guest Ms. Reem Alsalem, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Girls, and Professor Miranda Forsyth. With decades of experience advocating for human rights, gender justice, and the protection of vulnerable communities, Ms. Alsalem brings unparalleled insights from her work with the UN, international NGOs, and academic institutions.

In this engaging session, we will explore the complex issues surrounding violence and harm inflicted on individuals accused of sorcery or witchcraft, in particular how this affects women and girls. Drawing on her extensive background—from her pivotal work with the UNHCR and various UN agencies to her academic expertise in international relations and human rights law—Ms. Alsalem will lead a critical dialogue on how deeply ingrained cultural practices, newly emerging forms of misogyny and legal systems can perpetuate violence against marginalised groups—and what can be done in response.

Don't miss this unique opportunity to hear from a leading advocate as she shares her perspective on promoting justice, ending violence, and safeguarding human dignity in the face of enduring stigmas. Join us for a thought-provoking discussion that aims to change the narrative and inspire actionable solutions.

After the conversation, we will have time for Q&A.

Ms. Reem Alsalem was appointed United Nations Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, its causes and consequences in July 2021 by the UN Human Rights Council. She started her tenure on 1 August 2021.
